The following verses from Proverbs 31:10-31, describing an Eshet Chayil
— a woman of valor are recited first: אֵשֶׁת חַיִל מִי יִמְצָא
וְרָחוֹק מִפְּנִינִים מִכְרָהּ׃
שֶׁקֶר הַחֵן וְהֶבֶל הַיּוֹפִי
אִשָּׁה יִרְאַת יְיָ הִיא תִתְהַלָּל׃
תְּנוּ לָהּ מִפְּרִי יָדֶיהָ
וִיהַלְלוּהָ בַשְּׁעָרִים מַעֲשֶׂיהָ׃ A woman of valor who can find?
Her value is far above jewels.
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Give her the fruit of her hands —
her own deeds will praise her in the gates. |
The main part of the Hashkavah memorial prayer starts here: רַחֲמָנָא דְּרַחֲמָנוּתָא דִי לֵיהּ הִיא
וּבְמֵימְרֵיהּ אִתְבְּרִיאוּ עָלְמַיָּא
עַלְמָא הָדֵין וְעַלְמָא דְּאָתֵי
וּגְנַז בֵּיהּ צַדְקָנִיּוֹת וְחַסְדָּנִיּוֹת
דְּעַבְדָן רְעוּתֵיהּ וּבְמֵימְרֵיהּ
וּבִיקָרֵיהּ וּבְתוּקְפֵיהּ
יֵאמַר לְמֵיעַל קֳדָמוֹהִי דּוּכְרָן
נֶפֶשׁ הָאִשָּׁה הַכְּבוּדָה וְהַצְּנוּעָה
וְהַנִּכְבֶּדֶת מָרַת Merciful One that the mercy is His,
one who created worlds by His utterance —
This World and the World to Come,
to conceal there the righteous and the devout
that do His bidding as per His instructions
for His glory and might.
May be recalled before Him
the soul of the honored and modest woman
and respected lady |

Among Sephardim the Jewish name of the deceased is usually followed by the Jewish
name of his or her mother (sometimes, father, depending on local custom). If these
are not known, non-Jewish names are used. Some insert the family name as well. |
רוּחַ יְיָ תְּנִיחֶנָּה
בְגַן עֵדֶן, דְּאִתְפְּטָרַת מִן עַלְמָא הָדֵין
כִּרְעוּת אֱלָהָא
מָארֵיהּ [נ״א׃ מָרֵא] שְׁמַיָּא וְאַרְעָא׃
הַמֶּלֶךְ בְּרַחֲמָיו
יָחוֹס וְיַחְמוֹל עָלֶיהָ׃
וְיִלָּוֶה אֵלֶיהָ הַשָּׁלוֹם
וְעַל מִשְׁכָּבָה יִהְיֶה שָׁלוֹם
כְּדִכְתִיב: יָבוֹא שָׁלוֹם
יָנוּחוּ עַל מִשְׁכְּבוֹתָם
הוֹלֵךְ נְכוֹחוֹ׃ May the spirit of the Lord give her rest
in paradise, because she left this world
according to the will of God -
Master of Heaven and Earth.
May the King in His mercy
have pity and mercy upon her.
May peace be with her
and on her resting place will be peace,
as it is written: "Peace will come;
they will rest on their beds —
[everyone] who walks in his uprightness." |

הַשּׁוֹכְבוֹת עִמָּהּ
בִּכְלַל הָרַחֲמִים וְהַסְּלִיחוֹת

- וְנאמַר אָמֵן׃ הקהל׃אָמֵן] She and all daughters of Israel,
who slumber with her,
are included in mercy and forgiveness
and so may it be
