The following verses from Job 28:12, Proverbs 3:13, Psalms 31:20 and 36:8-9
are recited for a rabbi or a wise, learned man: וְהַחָכְמָה מֵאַיִן תִּמָּצֵא
וְאֵי זֶה מְקוֹם בִּינָה׃
אַשְׁרֵי אָדָם מָצָא חָכְמָה
וְאָדָם יָפִיק תְּבוּנָה׃
מָה רַב טוּבְךָ
אֲשֶׁר צָפַנְתָּ לִּירֵאֶיךָ
פָּעַלְתָּ לַחוֹסִים בָּךְ
נֶגֶד בְּנֵי אָדָם׃
מַה יָּקָר חַסְדְּךָ אֱלהִים
וּבְנֵי אָדָם
בְּצֵל כְּנָפֶיךָ יֶחֱסָיוּן׃
יִרְוְיֻן מִדֶּשֶׁן
בֵּיתֶךָ וְנַחַל
עֲדָנֶיךָ תַשְׁקֵם׃ And wisdom, where can it be found?
And where is the place of understanding?
Praiseworthy is the man, who found wisdom,
and the man, who will derive understanding.
How abundant is Your goodness
that You have stored for those who fear You,
that You have done for those who trust in You
before the sons of men!
How precious is Your kindness, O God!
And the children of men
take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
They are brimming from the nourishment
of Your house and from the stream
of Your delights You give them to drink. |
The following verses from Ecclesiastes 7:1, 12:13 and Psalms 149:5
are recited for everyone: טוֹב שֵׁם מִשֶּׁמֶן טוֹב
וְיוֹם הַמָּוֶת מִיּוֹם הִוָּלְדוֹ׃
סוֹף דָּבָר הַכּל נִשְׁמָע
אֶת הָאֱלהִים יְרָא וְאֶת מִצְוֹתָיו שְׁמוֹר
כִּי זֶה כָּל הָאָדָם׃
יַעְלְזוּ חֲסִידִים בְּכָבוֹד
יְרַנְּנוּ עַל מִשְׁכְּבוֹתָם׃ A good name is better than good oil,
And the day of death than the day of birth.
At the end, when all has been considered:
Fear God and keep His commandments
for this is the essence of man.
Let the devout rejoice in glory,
they will sing joyously upon their beds. |
The main part of the Hashkavah memorial prayer starts here: מְנוּחָה נְכוֹנָה בִּישִׁיבָה עֶלְיוֹנָה
יש מוסיפים׃
[תַחַת כַּנְפֵי הַשְּׁכִינָה]
בְּמַעֲלַת קְדוֹשִׁים וּטְהוֹרִים
כְּזוֹהַר הָרָקִיעַ מְאִירִים וּמַזְהִירִים׃
וְחִלּוּץ עֲצָמִים וְכַפָּרַת אֲשָׁמִים
וְהַרְחָקַת פֶּשַׁע וְהַקְרָבַת יֶשַׁע׃
וְחֶמְלָה וַחֲנִינָה
מִלִּפְנֵי שׁוֹכֵן מְעוֹנָה
וְחוּלָקָא טָבָא לְחַיֵּי הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא
שָׁם תְּהֵא מְנַת וּמְחִיצַת וִישִׁיבַת נֶפֶשׁ
הַשֵּׁם הַטּוֹב יש מוסיפים׃ [הַמְּרוּחָם] Proper rest in the lofty place of gathering,
some add:
[under the wings of the Divine presence,]
on the exalted level of the holy and pure ones,
who illuminate and shine like glow of heaven.
Ressurection for bones, atonement for sins,
distancing from crime and nearing salvation.
Compassion and clemency
from One Who is dwelling on high
and a fine portion in the World to Come.
There will be the share and abode of the soul
with good some add: [forgiven] name |

Among Sephardim the Jewish name of the deceased is usually followed by the Jewish
name of his or her mother (sometimes, father, depending on local custom). If these
are not known, non-Jewish names are used. Some insert the family name as well. |
רוּחַ יְיָ תְּנִיחֶנּוּ
בְגַן עֵדֶן, דְּאִתְפְּטָר מִן עַלְמָא הָדֵין
כִּרְעוּת אֱלָהָא
מָארֵיהּ [נ״א׃ מָרֵא] שְׁמַיָּא וְאַרְעָא׃
מֶלֶךְ מַלְכֵי הַמְּלָכִים בְּרַחֲמָיו
יְרַחֵם עָלָיו
וְיָחוֹס וְיַחְמוֹל עָלָיו׃
מֶלֶךְ מַלְכֵי הַמְּלָכִים בְּרַחֲמָיו
יַסְתִּירֵהוּ בְּצֵל כְּנָפָיו
וּבְסֵתֶר אָהֳלוֹ
לַחֲזוֹת בְּנוֹעַם יְיָ
וּלְבַקֵּר בְּהֵיכָלוֹ׃
וּלְקֵץ הַיָּמִין יַעֲמִידֵהוּ
וּמִנַּחַל עֲדָנָיו
יַשְׁקֵהוּ׃
וְיִצְרוֹר בִּצְרוֹר הַחַיִּים נִשְׁמָתוֹ
וְיָשִׂים כָּבוֹד מְנוּחָתוֹ׃
יְיָ הוּא נַחֲלָתוֹ׃
וְיִלָּוֶה אֵלָיו הַשָּׁלוֹם
וְעַל מִשְׁכָּבוֹ יִהְיֶה שָׁלוֹם
כְּדִכְתִיב: יָבוֹא שָׁלוֹם
יָנוּחוּ עַל מִשְׁכְּבוֹתָם
הוֹלֵךְ נְכוֹחוֹ׃ May the spirit of the Lord give him rest
in paradise, for he left this world
according to the will of God -
Master of Heaven and Earth.
May the King of kings in His mercy
be compassionate to him,
and have pity and mercy upon him.
May the King of kings in His mercy
shelter him under the cover of His wings
and in the shelter of His tent
to contemplate pleasantness of the Lord
and visit His Sanctuary.
At the End of Days He will make him stand up
and from the stream of His delights
will give him to drink.
May He bind in the bond of life his soul
and give honor to his rest.
The Lord is his heritage.
May peace be with him
and on his resting place will be peace,
as it is written (Isaiah 57:2): "Peace will come;
they will rest on their beds —
[everyone] who walks in his uprightness." |

בִּכְלַל הָרַחֲמִים וְהַסְּלִיחוֹת

are included in mercy and forgiveness
and so may it be
